Completely landlocked by Italy and located in the Apennine Mountains, it’s not surprising most people don’t know where the Most Serene Republic of San Marino is. The third smallest state in Europe, after the Vatican City and Monaco, San Marino is the world’s oldest republic, having been founded in 301 by a Christian stonemason fleeing religious persecution.

San Marino boasts a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, sunny summers, providing the perfect environment to explore all this magical country has to offer. With three distinct towers overlooking the country from the three peaks of Monte Titano in the capital, San Marino’s history and culture is evident in its sights and simply walking around the city’s narrow streets will award visitors with some unique discoveries. The San Marino Historical Centre and Mount Titano was named a UNESCO World heritage Site and is worth a visit.

San Marino is a safe country with very little crime, but visitors should, as in any country, be aware of petty theft and pickpockets, and although there are no major health risks associated with travelling to San Marino, travellers should have comprehensive medical insurance.

Sample some of the country’s Limoncello and wines, or relax with a cup of coffee and a slice of La Torta Di Tre Monti (Cake of the Three Mountains/Towers) and watch the world go by in this beautiful, verdant mountain country.

Lively, lascivious Amsterdam has a unique atmosphere that belies the caricature of the dour Dutch.

Radiating out from the Dam Square, the historic centre of the city is ringed by quaint canals and cobbled streets, thronged with bicycles, tourists, houseboats, students, and street performers. The city wears two faces: on one it smiles and beckons hedonistic youth with its notorious Red Light District and liberal view of marijuana use, while on the other it offers some of Europe’s finest museums and art galleries.

For the tourist the joy of Amsterdam is its compactness. The old part of town is a pleasure to explore on foot, strolling across ancient bridges and down narrow lanes past gabled houses, dropping in to browse in inviting souvenir boutiques crammed with blue and white Delft china and wooden clogs. Pavement cafes and cosy bars offer rest and refreshment. An alternative is to take a circular canal-boat cruise and see the city from the water, peering in on the lives of the locals who live on houseboats lining the waterways.

At night even the most conservative visitor is drawn by the lively atmosphere of the infamous Red Light District, known as De Wallen, which is bounded by the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Oudeziujds Achterburgwal canals near the Dam Square. Here prostitutes display their charms in brightly lit shop windows and touts encourage passers-by to view raunchy floorshows. The best nightclubs, bars, and the theatres and cinemas are mainly to be found in the bustling Leidesplein and Rembrandtplein.

Why? A holiday in Amsterdam must rate near the top of the list for any grand European tour. The city is full of old world charm with its quirky features, from the houseboats on the canals to the distinctive architecture of its townhouses. Travel to Amsterdam for lively nightlife, awesome art galleries, shopping for souvenirs, and to liberally sample the indigenous Heineken beer.

When? Spring (April/May) is the best time to holiday in Amsterdam: the weather may be unsettled but this is when Holland’s great flower shows are in full bloom providing a bonus for tourists. The Queen’s Birthday in April is also a major event when Amsterdam parties in the streets.

Who for? An Amsterdam holiday will enchant anyone of any age. The compact city centre can be explored on foot even by the less energetic, and there are attractions aplenty to entertain young and old.

More info: Our Amsterdam travel guide is an invaluable resource for anyone planning to travel to Amsterdam. The Amsterdam travel guide features information about public transport, the location of major attractions, restaurant suggestions and a host of other useful facts and figures.

Although now best known for its football teams, Manchester was once one of England’s greatest Victorian cities and was the birthplace of both rail travel and Rolls Royce. It is situated on the east bank of the Irwell River, in the north west of the country, and is the centre of a huge metropolitan area, which now encompasses the surrounding towns of Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport and Oldham. Liverpool is just 30 miles (48km) down river. The area has long had a reputation as a drab, industrialised sprawl, but Manchester has succeeded in reinventing itself, becoming a vibrant metropolis with nightlife second only to London. The city boasts more than 50 free museums and galleries, a world-class sports centre that recently hosted the Commonwealth Games, and plenty of parks, gardens and other attractions.

The city’s architecture is largely a reminder of its central role in the cotton trade and many of the original warehouses can still be seen, although modern-day Manchester is now very different from its heyday as an industrial hub. When the city centre was badly damaged in an IRA bombing in 1996, much of the central area was beautifully renovated. Now renamed the Millennium Quarter, it is a marvellous contrast of splendid Victorian architecture and towering glass edifices, including the eye-catching Urbis exhibition centre.

Manchester City and Manchester United are two of the biggest football clubs in England and Old Trafford (home to Manchester United) has become a huge tourist destination. For those more interested in arts and culture than football, the new Lowry complex in Salford Quays boasts a fantastic selection of art galleries and theatres. The city also plays host to countless events, concerts, festivals and parades, is home to world-class bars and restaurants, and has plenty of shops and markets. Manchester is also home to the United Kingdom’s largest Chinatown, and a vibrant and friendly Gay Village, concentrated around Canal and Chorlton Streets.

Why? Site of Britain’s two biggest universities and home to two world-class football clubs, a holiday in Manchester is bound to include plenty of partying and action. There is a side of Manchester reserved for serious sightseers too, with several historic and cultural attractions on offer.

When? When you travel to Manchester be prepared for the weather to be typically English, that is, highly unpredictable. Generally summer is a good time to holiday in Manchester, with mild, mainly sunny days. The city gets more than its fair share of rain, mainly during the cold winters.

Who for? Although it is not regarded as one of Britain’s most important tourist destinations, a few days’ holiday in Manchester is worthwhile for anyone touring the UK and interested in discovering this major northwestern metropolis. The city is also very gay-friendly and the area concentrated around Canal Street is the site of a popular annual Pride festival.

More Info: Anyone deciding whether or not to holiday in Manchester is well advised to read our comprehensive Manchester travel guide, which may reveal some surprises about the merits of this vast English city.

The problem with visiting New York is knowing where to begin, but even if you don’t immediately rush off to view the world-famous sights and icons of this most dynamic of cities, just being there is enough. The wonder of New York is in the energy and the diversity that emanates from its densely packed, multi-cultural population. The city vibrates with colliding cultures, languages and nuances; here high-life and low-life rub shoulders, and whoever you are and whatever your taste, there will be something to amuse and stimulate you 24-hours a day.

Whether lolling on a bench in leafy Central Park, watching the world go by from a French bistro in Soho, gazing up at ‘Lady Liberty’ from the deck of the Staten Island Ferry, most visitors will feel they’ve done it all before, simply because New York is so familiar to anyone who has ever seen a movie or watched television. There is something special however in actually seeing the familiar landmarks and experiencing the pulse of the clichéd, but true, ‘city that never sleeps’.

New York City is made up of five boroughs – Staten Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, but many visitors never leave Manhattan. There is a lot packed into this tiny area: the 24-hour pasta restaurants of Little Italy and the bustling sidewalks of Chinatown, the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village and the theatres of Broadway; and of course the iconic sights of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Times Square.

New York has been described as the best three-day city in the world, and that’s about right. After a frenzy of museums, galleries, bars and clubs, some visitors are ready for a break. Fortunately there’s a lot of choice, from the National Parks of Upstate New York, to the beaches of Long Island or simply the leafy oasis of Central Park. Whatever you’re after, New York is ready and waiting to bewitch, bother and bewilder.

Why? New York really is the city that never sleeps and draws people from all over the world to experience this iconic city. Most arrive on business, but millions travel on holiday to New York to see the sights, trawl the famous shopping streets, see a show on Broadway, and soak up the atmosphere.

When? The best time to travel to New York is during September and October, when the days are mild and pleasant, without the high humidity of the spring and summer months that can make a holiday in New York uncomfortable, or the snow and freezing temperatures that occur in winter.

Who for? The very old and the very young may find a holiday in New York too taxing, but everyone else will find something magical to enjoy in this energetic city.

More Info: Our New York travel guide, which is updated regularly, gives full information on travel to New York and all the excitement that awaits on your arrival. Details of events, restaurants and attractions are all included in the travel guide to New York, as well as basic information for international visitors like entry requirements, health and safety precautions.

Whether you arrive in London via the underground or inside one of the city’s ubiquitous black taxicabs, you will immediately be greeted by a deep sense of history and met with the unique vibrancy of this incredible destination.

In its dark and troubled past, the city of London has survived Roman occupancy, sackings from the Celts, Romans, Vikings and Saxons, a Norman invasion, two great fires, the bubonic plague, Nazi bombings, the Spice Girls and Damien Hirst.

But the London of today promises something for everyone. The London Eye lifts visitors high above the river into vistas that stretch tight across the fading skies. Further down on the South Bank, the Tate Modern contains one of the world’s most incredible collections of Modern Art, while the city’s 30,000 stores and boutiques will exhaust even the most avid shopper, and its 6,000 restaurants are only too eager to demonstrate why Britons revere their chefs as celebrities.

For those interested in exploring the country’s heritage, the Tower of London is an excellent starting point. First constructed in the 11th century, the Tower has been rebuilt several times as later monarchs have left their mark. Still one of London’s biggest attractions, and a great celebration of pomp that is free to all visitors is the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, which happens daily.

As the great dome of St Paul’s reflects the colours of the setting sun, London comes alive with an unrivalled nightlife. For those up for something more thrilling than dinner and the theatre, London has a vast number of bars and nightclubs catering to all tastes.

Why? England’s historic capital was the centre of the British Empire for generations, and is imbued with a sense of history. Modern London has retained its ancient heritage and remains the focus of world events. Anyone wishing to understand and explore the origins of Western culture will revel in a holiday in London, where traditional attractions still amaze and astound.

When? London is famed for its abundance of rain and fog, so an umbrella is a necessity when planning to travel to London on holiday any time of year. The best time to holiday in London is during spring (May and June) when the parks erupt in a profusion of flowering bulbs, or autumn, when the trees turn into golden hues and skies are often a murky blue. The long summer evenings make June and July good months to travel, although public transport can become oppressive on hot days. Winters are gloomy, dark and cold.

Who for? A holiday in London is enjoyable for anyone and everyone. Families with children can visit numerous entertaining attractions, from the Tower of London with its bloody history to the London Dungeon and Madame Tussaud’s waxworks museum or the London Eye with its stunning vistas of the city. Couples can enjoy the restaurants and nightlife, see a West End show, and explore the markets and famous shopping streets.

More Info: Our London travel guide includes recent reviews of where to eat and what to do in London, whether on holiday or business. The Basics section includes essential advice for international travellers on entry requirements, customs, currency, tipping and more.

Work & Travel’a katılacak öğrencilerin programdan neler beklediklerini çok iyi belirlemeleri gerekmektedir.

7 no’lu otobüs Sosyal Güvenlik Dairesi’nin de yakınından geçmektedir.
